Istanbul Quickie

Yeseterday I went to Asia.

Twice.

A bit of a fluke, actually. David (from the Canary Islands, whom I met at the Blue Mosque and again at Topkapi Palace) said that a six-hour tour of the Bosphorus straits left at 1:30. Apparently the 1:30 is only in the summer. So we took a regular ferry for a 40-minute ride, for $1.25 each way. We hopped off at Cengelkoy, where I proceeded to get ripped off when I paid $1.60 for two pears. After a very short walk, we sat at an outdoor café, watching the boats pass up and down the Bosphorus. A nice change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the touristy Sultanahmet area.

After returning to the central part of Istanbul, and a requisite visit to the spice Bazaar and paying a small fortune for 1 gram of Saffron...

...we stopped by a nearby mosque which is nearly 400 years old, yet still called the "New Mosque"...

...and then decided to take yet another ferry ride to Asia to watch the sun set over Sultanahmet.

Confession. I am eating the pear as I write this blog entry, and it is crisp, sweet and probably the best pear I have ever had. Okay, it was worth 80 cents.

Question: If I go to Asia twice in one day, does it actually count as one real visit?

Admission. Finally, having sorted through 300 photos of Istanbul, I’ve selected about 30 that are representative or help tell a story. But, I’m tired and going to bed. Good night.

I remember the overwhelming smell of body odor in the mosque...it was something that overpowered me when I walked in. How interesting to remember that, most of all. But when your senses are triggered, such as your taste of that pear, it is those things that seem to resonate in our memory and make it the easiest to recall.

Sounds like a great adventure! We miss you.
